Crochets and Backpacks

This week marks the birthday celebrations for my beautiful Mum. Here's wishing her all the happiness and love in the universe.

Nothing screams more happy and relaxed to me for spring/ summer than crochets, yummy jewellery and backpacks. Can you tell I can't wait to be on a tropical getaway?

Its not the labels that make me happy, the soft feel of much used crochet, a worn-in suede belt, leather sandals bought in Bombay ages ago combined with a vintage backpack and necklace make me feel like a princess.

What are your go-to pieces that never fail to make you feel great?

Fun with Ferns

Spend this afternoon in a beautiful fern covered magical hideaway and I couldn't be happier. Wore my maxi skirt as a hi-low dress with multiple merino wool sweaters plus wool socks and boots and was good to go. Add a colourful hand knotted bag and silk scraf to any outfit and to me its complete. Honestly I don't get why people feel badly dressed or not cool if they're not wearing the latest trending items.

What is the point of wearing something that is being worn by everyone and their neighbour? Don't get me wrong sometimes I see someone who is wearing a currently trending item in a way that is completely different from everyone else. I mean trending or not when someone wears something that they truly like, I believe it shows.

I have been attracted to colour and interesting prints forever and that hasn't changed inspite of the amount of fashion magazines I've read or editorials I've admired or even blogs I've browsed through.

This skirt for example was bought in the dusty streets of Delhi's Paharganj with one of the kindest people I know (Hey Carola) and I don't think I am ever going to part with it. I have too many good memories attached to it and sometimes wear it as a maxi skirt, dress or scraf. It cost less than $5 and I walked past it multiple times before Carola said just buy it and get it over with. I would like to think that the things I buy today will be enjoyed for a long time.

The earliest memories of my love for fabrics are touching beautiful silk sarees in my Grandmother's closet and watch her get dressed. I could watch her for hours...

I remember I used to wait for my Mother to leave me alone at home presumably to do my homework but as soon as a door shut I would run to her dressing table play dress up with her silk sarees, scarves and lipsticks. As soon as she walked in she'd know I'd been up to my usual mischief but I would shake my head from side to side maniacally, make my best puppy face and insist I had been studying.

Okay enough rambling all I wanted to say was, I love fabrics, colours and don't give two hoots about what is in and what is not. Happy Saturday world!

Shubo Noboborsho

Dress: Gifted, Suede fringe sandals, Leather belt & Fabric and leather bag: India, Jeweller: All over

I don't understand why people shy away from yellow, its such a pretty colour and also I don't understand why people start dressing in various shades of dull-ness once the cooler months start. Not that its getting colder in Sydney, its been sunny but plesant here for the past few days and I love it. I know it won't stay this way for very long and that's why I am enjoying the last bits of sunshine before starting to dress in serious layers.

I hope to still look like myself not the Michelin man once the temperatures start to dip, its very hard though, I have the habit of wearing everything I own in an attempt to stay toasty. Hopefully spring has arrived for all the people who are tired of the cold up North and its getting warmer. I know I look like I am dressing more for spring than autumn but so far autumn in Sydney has just been beach weather so while the sun shines down I am going to be as summery as I want. The title of the post refers to the fact that today is the start of the New year for a lot of people who follow the Solar/ Hindu calender in South-East Asia, to everyone celebrating today, Happy New Year. Have a great start to the week.

Suede shorts and bombshell cuff

Scalloped suede shorts: Kookai, Jewelery: Gifts and from India, Fringe sandals: Sportsgirl

Its finally spring and all I want to do is wear gladiator sandals, shorts, hacked off tees without tights or sweaters, pile on the jewelery and gamble about at the beaches and the rock faces screaming Yaaaaaay sunshine. Now on to something a little less frivolous the first of the brass cuffs is from Ranjana Association retailing at Oxfam, their brass jewelery made from old Cambodian bomb shells left behind by the Khymer rouge. It such a beautifully made, hand crafted message of peace and starting over that I couldn't help but buy it. I hope everyone is having a wonderful start of the week. Happy Wednesday all!

Indigo vegetable dyed beauty

Indigo tunic and Jewellery: India, Bag: Gift, Boots: France

I have a deep abiding love for all kinds of ethnic textiles especially if it involves, vegetable/ tie dyes, block print, patch work, embroidery and the list keep going. I bought this tunic because I fell in love with the deep indigo hue but it wasn't really my size and then I sat home and sewed and hemmed till it has become this perfect shapeless sack that I love. I don't really know how to use a sewing machine and don't have access to one therefore do any alterations that I have to by hand. I reaaally reaaally want to learn to sew and be able to whip up atleast basic things and be able to do minor alterations. Something to add to the already super long to-do list.

The silver enameled kundan earrings are hand-made by a small jeweler in a pattern that I chose. Kundan enameled Jewellery is created by setting different shaped, cut and polished multi coloured gemstones or enamel into a metal base. Its one of my most favourite kinds of jewelery but then again I love lots of different kinds of bijoux.
In other news I have just cut up a penny-lane-esque leather skirt today and can't wait to wear it. I might even dress as a messed up groupie for Halloween lets see. Hope everyone has had a good start to the week. Happy Monday all :D

Vintage Versace goodness

Vintage Versace shorts: DIY-ed gifted jeans, Boots: Gifted, Hat: Myers, Jewellery: All over, Everything else: Thrifted

I have been on the look out for the perfect pair of Mom jeans to hack into a pair of boy-friend shorts that are back-packing across India-suitable and a friend just gave me her old vintage Versace, made in Italy jeans that were then DIY-ed into this man-repeller goodness. They hang off me in a shape that apparently is pleasant only to my eyes and I am in LOVE with them. I love items that travel all over the world like these boots, they were ordered online by the boy, delivered to his address in Europe and flew to Sydney with his friend and are my new footwear obsession.

I don't think I need to elaborate on my love for crochet, tie-dye, silver jewellery or carpet bags because looking at my pictures one can definitely tell I hoard all items of the above mentioned description. I put these things together haphazardly just because it was warmish, I wanted to wear my shorts, twirl my crochet shawl around, pretend to be a witch and obviously take photos. I think I succeeded and am going to bed a happy little girl. Have a great weekend all!

White bird

Crochet dress: Op-shopped, Belt: India, Bag: African markets, Moccasins: Minnetonka, Kimono: Random shop in Paddington, Jewellery: All over

I've been crazy busy working non-stop; saving money for my trip eeeeeeeeeee two weeks before my back-packing sojourn in the Himalayas and the Thar desert with one of my best friends, CANNOT WAIT. With weather here playing spoilt sport and the crazy schedule I haven't really had much time this week for fun outing or outfit posts but this morning we had a little burst of sunshine therefore I couldn't help but wear my favourite combination of crochet with Kimono/Cape. And paired it with my beloved rings, leather bracelets and belt, tooled African leather cross-body bag and my moccasins basically all my favourite things. The belt I mentioned in one of my previous posts can be seen more clearly in this one, isn't she the prettiest? I wish it was summer and we had all the music festivals to go to, ah well come November when the northern hemisphere prepares for winter we'll be looking forward to the beautiful almost tropical Sydney summer.

On another note, I have just discovered a great great blog Madame de Rosa, most of it is in Spanish but the pictures are lovely and she wears the most original outfits. She's extremely popular and maybe you have heard of her already but I cannot stop myself from sharing inspirational finds. I have just gone through almost all of her blog and am left wanting more. Here are a few of her pictures; SHEER BRILLIANCE. Have a lovely week everyone!

The last four pictures are from Madame de Rosa's blog.

Turquoise suede

Suede jacket: Vinnies, Paddington, Tunic: Cotton-on, Heels: Witchery

Okay I know this look is not super put together or anything; neither is the background pretty; sorry about that btw, the whole point of this post is the turquoise suede jacket. I know what you are thinking if the point is the jacket why didn't I just put it on a hanger and take pictures? Well because it fits me amazingly well, in the sense that its not too fitted and its not too anti-fit either aka PERFECT. Okay I know turquoise suede jackets are not that uncommon or anything but these are thrifted, bought for almost nothing, fit me perfectly! I mean seriously how much more can one ask for?

I was soooo excited with this bargain buy that I've been wearing it non-stop even when the boy decided to make some carbonara at home yesterday evening. I dressed for our at home dinner-date in this little tunic, my fave jacket, turquoise anklets and heels. Since I dress for myself why should I have to wait to go out to doll up? We took the photos after dinner and to tell you the truth I didn't like the pictures but I still decided to put them up. I think its not really about putting up perfect pictures we have fashion magazines for that, its about sharing what I find exciting. And I find amazing thrift finds extremely fun therefore you have this entire post of me rambling about my awesome suede beauty. Happy Saturday everyone!
